How It All Started: Building Beeterty to Solve Real Invoicing Pain

Every product has a story. Ours started with frustration, a phone call that went way too long, and a problem we'd been living with for years without doing anything about it.

February 2023: The Call That Changed Everything

One night, three of us got on a call. It was supposed to be a quick catch up. It turned into an 8 hour conversation.

We were reflecting on work we'd done before. Product work, client work, freelancing. And this nagging feeling that we could build something better. Something more useful. Something we'd actually be proud of before turning 30.

During that conversation, one frustration kept surfacing over and over:

  • We were losing money on invoices.
  • We'd forget to account for withholding tax and end up getting paid less than expected.
  • We'd do good work, send an invoice, and still get short changed because the paperwork wasn't right.

And here's what made it worse: we knew we weren't the only ones dealing with this. Every freelancer and small business owner we talked to had the same stories. The same confusion about tax deductions. The same frustration with chasing payments. The same messy spreadsheets and WhatsApp invoicing.

The Core Problem

Invoicing sounds simple until it starts affecting your cash flow.

When your invoices are unclear, missing tax details, or poorly tracked, a chain reaction starts. Payments get delayed. Revenue records get messy. Financial decisions become guesswork. And you end up spending more time on admin than on the work that actually earns you money.

We were tired of solving this manually. Tired of chat threads, spreadsheets, and relying on memory to figure out who owed us what.

So we made a decision: build tools that help businesses handle invoicing and revenue collection properly.

From Talking About It to Actually Building It

The day after that call, we stopped planning and started executing.

We set up the basics fast:

  • A shared communication channel
  • Product planning documents
  • Design files
  • Code repositories
  • A regular working schedule

Each of us brought different strengths. Product and design. Engineering. Operations and infrastructure. But we shared responsibilities where needed because speed and consistency mattered more than perfect role boundaries.

Our rule was simple: move forward, ship, and improve.

First Release and Early Signs

It took about 6 months to get the first version out.

The early results were encouraging. A meaningful percentage of waitlist users converted to active accounts. People started creating real invoices for real clients. Usage spread across multiple African countries.

But it wasn't all smooth. We had disagreements. Stressful stretches. Hard conversations about direction, priorities, and what to cut versus what to keep. We also had strong alignment on the things that mattered, accountability to each other, and a willingness to correct quickly when something wasn't working.

That discipline mattered as much as the code we wrote.

Why Beeterty Exists

Beeterty exists to help businesses:

  • Send professional invoices that clients take seriously
  • Track what's been paid and what's still outstanding
  • Understand their income and revenue patterns more clearly
  • Collect payments with less friction and less awkwardness

This is bigger than our small team. It's about solving a practical, everyday business problem that millions of people across Africa deal with but rarely talk about openly.

A Note to Anyone Sitting on an Idea

If you've been thinking about building something, start.

You don't need perfect timing. You don't need a polished business plan. You don't need to feel 100% confident. You need a real problem, a clear reason to care about solving it, and the discipline to show up consistently.

That first step can change everything.

If you want to see what we're building, start your invoicing journey with Beeterty and tell us what you think. Every piece of feedback helps us build something better for everyone.
